Lollywood refers to Pakistani Urdu cinema; the word Lollywood is a mixture of Hollywood and Lahore as L of Lollywood represents Lahore where Pakistani film industry based. Most of the pictures in Lollywood were in Urdu language in past but nowadays trends have been changed and only few films are made in Urdu language while rest are in Punjabi language, this is due to the fact that standard of Pakistani Urdu and Punjabi movies is not good. Cinema in Pakistan is going to destroy because of its low standard, people and good families are not moving towards cinema. This crisis of Urdu cinema was started in 1980 by the release of Punjabi film “Maulajat. In 1990 Pakistani cinema was revived by the release of film Jeeva by Syed Noor, Inteha by Samina pirzada, Ghonghat by Syed Noor, Khilona by Sangeeta and Chief saab by Javed shaikh but this revival was for short time period, Punjabi movies again influenced the Urdu movies and Gundasa culture was re-borne.

Important names of Lollywood are: Santosh Kumar, Jahangir, Madam Noor Jahan, Imtiaz Ali Taj, Anwar Kamal Pasha, Sabeeha Khanum, Sudhir, Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, Muhammad Ali, Zeba, Waheed Murad, Shabnum, Nadeem Baig, Mustafa Qureshi, Sultan Rahi, Rangeela, Munawwar Zareef, Shahid, Rani, Shan, Reema, Maummar Rana, Meera, Saima, Syed Noor, Sangeeta, Shamim Ara, Javed Sheikh, etc

In 1958, Nigar award was first time started by a film journalist, Ilyas Rashidi, award was presented for best performances in Lollywood.

Recently, Shoaib Mansoor’s “Khuda kay Liyey” broke all the records in the history of Pakistani cinema. Starred Iman Ali, Fawad, Shaan, Naseer uddin Shah. This film has changed the typical Pakistani movie image. Due to the failure of Pakistani movies plazas and other commercial building replaced cinemas but Pakistan government has lifted the ban on the showing of Indian movies. To some extent, people are coming back to cinemas. But Lollywood has to produce some more good movies on box office to bring Pakistani people back to cinema and for the revival of Pakistani cinema.
